You gotta know when to fold em…

Freakswitch played at the Ace of Clubs in Manhattan this past Saturday.  We were scheduled to go on at 9:45.  So we decided to to get there early and walk around a little bit and get the whole city vibe going.  It was pretty cool.  Grabbing some dinner and a drink, we walked back to the club to get ready.

For those who don’t know how playing in quite a few clubs in NYC works, the bar depends on each band bringing people with them so that they can sell some drinks and make money.  The problem is that Freakswitch is not from the city.  We were hoping that the cool time slot along with people from Brians old stomping ground would give us one kick ass crowd.  Unfortunately people we unable to make it and Freakswitch had TWO people there that went out of their way to see them.

This was the second time we played the Ace of Clubs.  This was the second time they cut our set list short.  Nikki Camp is a cool guy but this was also the last time that Freakswitch will be playing there.  Not sure Nikki would want us back, but even if he did, we would decline the invitation because it just isn’t financially a good decision for all party’s involved.

Its a shame that the scene in the city is as bad as it is.  You would think that the best city in the world would have a click that supported live music.  Oh how the times have changed.  Maybe we’ll see what Albany has to offer next.  I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

As for our show, we had fun like we always do.  The sound was great and the sound man knows what he is doing back there.

UPCOMING SHOWS:
1.22.11 at the Wherehouse in Newburgh
2.3.11 at the Chance in Poughkeepsie w/ Lynch Mob

Until next time…..

NYC has been pointless for a long time now. I remember when my old band would play all over the city in the early 2000′s (and we were FROM there). Its either pay-to-play or they give you a Mon-Thurs slot when the bar/club is fairly quiet on its own, and they expect you as the band to be able to get a crowd in there. Now, I don’t know about you guys, but I usually can’t even make it to MSG for a national act on a weekday! Forget about some no-namers like us! People have work and school and stuff, and most of the action is on the weekends. That’s the way it is. I can understand why pay-to-play came about and all, but there ARE other ways to introduce bands in our boat to new potential fans. I’m sure you guys have been in the situation before like you were on Saturday, and it sucks, I know all too well. I’ll be checking out Freakswitch either in Newburgh, or when your next Chance gig comes up next month. Can’t wait to meet you all!

Our first time at Ace of Clubs was a Thursday slot and they wanted us to bring 30 people. Thanks to Brian we had 10. So I was surprised that they wanted us back for a Saturday gig. We did it, we enjoyed our time in the city, but won’t be returning to play music anyway. Be sure to come say hi to us when you come to our show. Its always great to meet people that appreciate live music. ~MK~
