So we played a show at the Derby on Main Street in Poughkeepsie on Saturday night for the kickoff party of the Hudson Valley Horrors Roller Derby season. Now let me start by saying that I had no friggin clue what to expect going into this show. The last time I watched roller derby was back in the 80′s and the women on those teams were scary men dressed as women and in dire need of a dentist. The HV Horrors may look like bad ass’s, but they pussycats. No wait, they’re not. THEY ARE PURE EVIL!!!!! (just in case their competition is reading this) And the supporters they have was incredible. The place was packed with everyone wearing HVH gear. PLUS we were sharing the bill with the band Tiger Piss.
You can make an assumption of the style of music a band will play when you hear the name. Example, you hear Freakswitch you think it doesn’t matter beacuse they are “Von Awesomeish”. You hear Disturbed, you’re not thinking country. You hear Go-Go’s, you know its going to suck regardless of the genre. But Tiger Piss? I had no clue what to expect.
Well Tiger Piss is a 3 piece band with a female lead vocalist/bass player. May I just say DAMN! Definitely would never have figured them to be what they are. They are a mix of pretty much every style of music you can think of. And just when you thought they were done, they throw a funny country song at you. I loved watching this band. Go visit them on myspace and facebook and tell them I sent you. You won’t receive anything but it’ll be cool if you told them you were promised a free cd or something. LOL
We took the stage around 11pm or so. It seemed like that people were filing out before we hit our first note. My first thought was “OK! Who did Brian piss off now?” But apparently they were just killing time until Freakswitch Von Awesomish (see facebook to understand that name) took the stage…….. I mean floor.
We usually start each show with “Once Around” and end each show with “Wrong Direction”. Well that night we thought we should be different. So we opened with “Once Around” and ended with “Wrong Direction” (yes you read that correctly). If it ain’t broke, why fix it……..
Once we get a song into out set, the crowd came back hanging everywhere possible to see what we were about. Looking down on us like we were some freak show at the zoo.
Its all good, because when we started “Standing in Line”, here come the HVH girls dancing their roller derby ass’s off. They were having a great time. Then again when you’re wearing a shirt that says “fresh meat” or “suzy smackahoe“, you pretty much don’t give a rats ass what people think in the first place.
It seemed like everyone had a great time that night. I know we did. If I were a betting man, I don’t think the Derby will be asking us back. They seem more of a coffee house style of setting. But nevertheless, GOOD TIMES!!!!!
Next gig is April 23rd at the East Side Bar and Grill on Rt 52 in Newburgh. Tigman from WPDH will be hosting Metal Night.
……peace
